It's amazing, isn't it - how much these special creatures bring to our lives - the bond that a SAR dog and handler share - so much like a melding of the minds that leaves us empty with their loss - and yet we can still feel them guiding and coaching us through that bond as we make our way towards healing - amazing how they can offer so much to our hearts - they are such incredible gifts that we are chosen to share our lives with - I cannot imagine a life without them. What is a DDR German Shepherd ?
A DDR German Shepherd Dog is a German Shepherd from the Deutshe Demokratishe Republik, also known as East Germany. At the start of WW2, the German Shepherd dog became very popular in Germany. Unfortunately, during the war, many of the dogs were recruited into the military and did not survive due to the unavailability of food supplies. At the end of WW2, the capital city of Berlin was divided into the east and the west zone by the Berlin Wall. East Berlin and East Germany remained under communist control until November 9, 1989 when the Berlin Wall was opened. Prior to that time, East German Dogs were kept isolated from West German Dogs and dogs from surrounding countries. Therefore, they retained their own distinct characteristics.
The DDR/East German Dogs are lean, strong and capable of working in many different environments. They are known for their dark pigmentation, heavy bone structure and big blocky head. They also have a low incident of hip dysplasia. These dogs are well suited for Schutzhund, police work, search and rescue, as well as a great family pet.
SAR dogs can find: Children lost in the wilderness, parks. People who have wandered away from homes, hospitals and nursing homes. Hikers and hunters lost in the woods. Victims of drowning accidents. Victims of earthquake, flood, explosions, fire, plane crashes, tornadoes and hurricanes. Evidence of crime and the bodies of homicide victims. Dog teams have a very special role in the world of search and rescue. The dog's ultra sensitive hearing, night vision, endurance, and keen sense of smell have continually proven to be invaluable in the effort to locate missing persons. Because of their extraordinary abilities, dogs are often able to reduce the search time, thereby increasing the chances that the person will be found alive. It is estimated that a single trained search dog team can be as effective as 20 to 30 trained human searchers in locating missing persons in a given time.
